Crisco Brand Olive Oil Review

Last month I found a recipe contest where the grand prize was a trip to Italy. Talk about my dream come true! I was so excited that I ran out and bought the product required for the contest-Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil. What a waste of time and money.

Most of the time I write positive reviews but this is a time that I cannot do that. I really wanted to like this olive oil because of the wonderful prize package but there is nothing positive worth saying about Crisco’s olive oil. It has almost no flavor, in fact I couldn’t detect any difference from this extra virgin olive oil and regular old vegetable oil. The ingredient listed is “extra virgin olive oil” but then further down the label it states that the product contains oils from five different countries. I’m not sure what that means but it didn’t make for a good product. I’m sure other olive oils are made up of oils from a variety of countries so I’m not using that as the standard of measurement.

One part of the contest requirements, along side of the recipe, was an essay stating how their product inspired you to create your original recipe. I could not in good conscience write an essay to that effect because I was not inspired in the least to create any dish. I mostly used up the bottle, so as not to waste my $3.19, in ways where the taste would not be a vital part of the final resulting dish. I wasn’t even going to blog about this contest and the awful olive oil but after talking with Phil, I decided it would be a good idea to write something. I really would not want anyone else to waste their money on an inferior product.

I try to stress using the best quality products you can afford when cooking as this will affect the taste and if you are looking to make a taste-pleasing dish, why wouldn’t you use the best? It took me years to come to this realization and once I learned this valuable lesson, I refuse to go back to the cheap products. Sure there are times when I can’t afford the best and in a pinch cheaper versions can work but I cannot recommend Crisco’s extra virgin olive oil product .  As I type this, I am sitting here asking myself why I actually used it for my family, who I love more than anyone else in the world?

So my advice for today is to use the best quality product you can when you cook. Julia Child  used real butter, not margarine. Shudder. Enough said.

  1. I have never been a Crisco fan. Blah :-P
    Yeah, Real Butter!! We switched to organic butter last year. Huge difference! yum! Also using coconut oil. Have you tried it yet? We stick to using saturated fats when using heat (including in baked goods) & unsaturated for dressings & such that won’t face heat.
    Any ideas for non dairy, non hydrogenated oils way to make frosting??

    I could not agree more. I had bought some awhile ago – a sucker for sale items – but yeah – no great shakes. One great brand is called Olivari Mediterranean olive oil. I’m actually doing a review on this myself but it isn’t up yet. But this was so good. I tested it on a raw salad and it was full of flavor! I think you can buy the brand at walmart. They also use a pop up spout which I thought for sure would make a mess, but it didn’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if other makers start doing this – it was genius.
